This Week's Contenders

Last week's theme was to make a deck using monsters of only 1 Type.

Spoiler

The Theme

This week's theme, chosen by Exarion, is mixing archetypes.

Usually with restrict use in these contests, archetypes tend to have a very consistent kit, not so challenging to work with. However, things get interesting when archetypes are mixed.

Create a deck using monsters that belong to an archetype only. At least 3 different archetypes must be used. No archetype may be dominant or just a tech: any archetype used must have a maximum of 2 monsters more than any other archetype in the deck. Extra Deck is free.

Have fun!

I can't tell if Spells/Traps are unrestricted or unable to be used at all. o.o

What about a deck using only tech archetypes?  Those are fun!

Unrestricted.

Otherwise I would have said "using only monsters..."

"using monsters that belong to an archetype only" could also very easily mean build a deck out of nothing but monsters that belong to archetypes. The fact you specifically mentioned that the Extra Deck is unrestricted and didn't mention S/Ts at all is a pretty big deal, too. ;p

Urgh... Not a terribly interesting criteria, but maybe I'll bother building a deck for it at some point.

Ok... >_>

And I mentioned it because there are monsters in the Extra Deck. :b

I promise my next theme will be more wild and crazy. Totally not asking for votes <.<

I quite like this theme. Was initially going to go for Kaiju Artifact Traptrix (how fun!), but I think I may just mesh my favourite archetypes into one.

No because then that wouldn't be my favourites :p

Nordic Blackwing Deskbots, maybe. I'll make it work. Hey, they all have Level 7 or 10 Synchros.

Can someone explain this line to me? Any archtype used must have a maximum of 2 monsters more than any other archtype in the deck. I have no idea what that means.

It means if, say, you're running 5 Venom monsters, you can't run more than 7 Iron Chain monsters.

I believe your entry is invalid, actually. (You have 7 Shaddolls, 6 Ritual Beasts, 10 Nekroz and 11 Zefras, meaning you have 5 more Zefras than Ritual Beasts.)

1 x Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning ("Black Luster Soldier")

1 x Cybernetic Magician ("Cybernetic", though funnily enough not "Cyber" or "Magician")

1 x Toon Gemini Elf ("Toon")

1 x Familiar-Possessed - Dharc ("Familiar-Possessed")

1 x Milla the Temporal Magician ("Magician")

1 x Shaddoll Squamata ("Shaddoll")

2 x Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress ("Lightsworn")

2 x Performage Trick Clown ("Performage")

3 x Breaker the Magical Warrior ("Prophecy", and it's not a "Warrior")

3 x Nefarious Archfiend Eater of Nefariousness ("Archfiend")

3 x Madolche Magileine ("Madolche")

1 x Gravekeeper's Guard ("Gravekeeper's")

1 x Geomancer of the Ice Barrier ("Ice Barrier")

1 x Trust Guardian ("Guardian", and yes, I'm aware this thing's not a Spellcaster)

2 x Pot of Duality

1 x Raigeki

2 x Secret Village of the Spellcasters

1 x Soul Charge

3 x Spellbook of Power

3 x Upstart Goblin

2 x Call of the Haunted

3 x Quaking Mirror Force

1 x Ring of Destruction

Extra:

1 x Clear Wing Synchro Dragon

1 x Black Rose Dragon

2 x Arcanite Magician

1 x Number 104: Masquerade

2 x Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon

2 x Performage Trapeze Magician

1 x Number 103: Ragnazero

1 x Number 101: Silent Honor ARK

1 x Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer

1 x Daigusto Emeral

1 x Abyss Dweller

1 x Gagaga Cowboy

14 archetypes. 20+ if you count the Extra Deck (not that it counts). There's plenty more I could've thrown in, but space was tight enough as-is. I'm surprised there isn't a minimum number of monsters required per archetype, but I don't feel bad abusing the lack of one.

River... after looking into it briefly, I think calling "Cybernetic" an archtype is a stretch. Yes, the wikia calls it that, but there are no cards to support the claim. Heck, only Cybernetic Fusion Support has the term in it's rules text, and only then to say that you can't use multiple copies during the same turn. And when did Breaker get to join the Prophecy archtype?

All TCG "Cyber" support supports both "Cyber" and "Cybernetic" cards in the OCG, which are seperate archetypes. (In the OCG, the "Cybernetic" cards are not "Cyber" cards.)

There are a LOT of "Prophecy" monsters that don't have "Prophecy" in their TCG names. Breaker happens to be one, as are things like Armor Exe, Giltia the D. Knight and The Illusory Gentleman. The only "Prophecy" Support card, Stoic of Prophecy, only works on Level 3 monsters to avoid this. There's a fair number of archetypes like this. ("Djinn" includes things like Dragon Piper, Necrolancer the Time Lord and Terra the Terrible, but its support cards only work on Xyz Monsters. Ryu Senshi's a "Warrior", and many things, like Breaker and Warrior Dai Grepher, that have "Warrior" in their TCG name are NOT "Warrior" monsters, but the supports only work on Synchros.) This is also why cards occasionally get excluded from support cards (like Frog supports excluding Frog the Jam), specifically INCLUDED in support (like Phantom Beast Cross-Wing including Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts), get archetype conditions (such as Beast of Talwar or Celestial Sword - Eatos), or get renamed (like Wattkid); their names are part (or not part) of an archetype in the OCG, but the TCG name didn't reflect that.

Note that in these cases, it's always what's part of the archetype in the OCG that's relevant. Vampire Vamp is the only card to ever just ignore this. (It works with Vampire Koala and Vampire Orchis in the TCG, despite them not being "Vampire" cards in the OCG. The other Vampire stuff only works with DARK monsters that aren't on the field, getting around this since they're both EARTH.) It's also why we get occasional quirks like not being able to send "Rainbow Dragon" to the Graveyard with "Elemental HERO Prisma". (The OCG doesn't name Rainbow Dragon or Rainbow Dark Dragon as materials, it refers to an archetype both cards belong to.)

I find it interesting how they work around all these issues. In some cases, it's easy ("The Eye of Timaeus" shouldn't be able to target cards like "Skilled Dark Magician" or "Dark Magician of Chaos" since they're not "Dark Magician" monsters in the OCG, but it doesn't need to exclude them because no Fusions list, or will list, those monsters as Fusion Materials.), in some cases it's really complicated (hence why "Arsenal Summoner" has a million exceptions, and why we have a bunch of Archfiends with archetype clauses), and in some cases, it just prevents support for an archetype altogether ("Knight" for instance, or "C". Incidentally, both of these are used in the anime/manga, where they don't need to worry about what already-existing cards are affected.)

It's so odd to me though. The Prophecy stuff is clearly supposed to be an extension of the Spellbook archtype, but it's ocg name is Magical. Magical applies to so many things in the game. and it feels so wrong to include the D/D savants and freaking Magical Merchant and Scientist into this archtype, when they don't interact with the archtype at all. Maybe I'm just being a cranky butt, though.
