Weekly Deck Building Contest!

Vb7v1SC.png

Welcome to the weekly deck building contest!
Congratulations to Yami Stomach, who won the 01/23 Weekly Deck Building Contest with his deck, Burning Soul!! Resonators make a full Tuner Monster archetype, fitting well into that contest. Trap monsters and Intstant Fusion provide non-Tuner monsters in order to Synchro Summon in this deck.
Everyone who participated will receive 1 x Pre-Synchro Era pack as thanks for participating. For winning this contest, Yami Stomach will instead receive his choice of 3 x Pre-Synchro Era or 1 x Pre-Xyz Era packs.

Previous Winners

  • The winner will instead receive a prize of their choice of 3 x Pre-Synchro Era packs or 1 x Pre-Xyz Era packs.
  • Be creative!

This Week's Contenders

Last week's theme was to make a Billy deck.

Spoiler

The Theme

This week's theme, chosen by Exarion, is anime decks!

When we watch the anime, the plays almost always work. But as our last tournaments have shown, reality is harsh. That's why this week's contest requires you to choose 1 character from the original series and update his or her deck with the TCG/OCG cards we know today. As additional rule: you can't use more than 2 different monsters from the same archetype (otherwise Mai, Pegasus, Seto, etc. would be just too easy).

Also, try to stay on the theme that character showed instead of go full video game mode and assemble a new, unrelated deck.

Have fun!

How do we stay on theme for the character if we almost neglect their archetype?

Crow, for example, really only uses Blackwings. How do you update their deck to be competitive if you weaken their deck?

That aside, I think I already know which character I'll be doing, and the above point shouldn't matter.

Okay, original series. Then replace Crow with Mai, as used in the example. The question still remains.

By chance, I was going to choose a character from the original series anyway. But now it's not such an obscure choice xD

Mai, Rafael and Seeker are the only ones rendered near-impossible by this. I don't see that as a big deal. (And you could probably still do Mai or Rafael.) Why is Kaiba even listed as someone that this would be made hard for? It prevents you using a very small selection of the new Blue-Eyes support. (And I guess BESD/Malefic Blue-Eyes, but so what?)

Anyway...

Solomon Muto.

Monsters: 21

2 x Power Giant

2 x Guardian Sphinx

3 x Dogu

3 x Masked Chameleon

1 x Wandering Mummy

1 x Ancient Dragon

3 x Giant Soldier of Stone

1 x Poison Mummy

2 x Swarm of Scarabs

2 x Dice Jar

1 x Sinister Serpent

Spells: 4

1 x Raigeki

3 x Swords of Revealing Light

Traps: 16

2 x Call of the Haunted

1 x Curse of Anubis

2 x Dust Tornado

2 x Mirror Force

1 x Needle Ceiling

2 x Needle Wall

2 x Non Aggression Area

3 x Ordeal of a Traveler

1 x That Six

Extra: 9

3 x Ancient Dragon Red Dragon Archfiend (they're nearly identical, and I couldn't pass up the excuse to use a Synchro in this contest)

3 x King of the Feral Imps (Feral Imp callback, and it's useful here)

3 x Giant Soldier of Steel

Based heavily on his deck in the Grand Championship arc. Power Giant being an Ancient Giant analogue, of course, and That Six being a stand-in for Legendary Gambler (though it is also pretty useful here, with Dice Jar and Needle Wall). Ancient Dragon is solely here for its name, obv.

Also, to prove a point. Bonus non-entry Mai deck, go!

Why is Kaiba even listed as someone that this would be made hard for?

I didn't say that. I said it would be too easy if one goes full Blue-Eyes on him.

I put those rules because I want it to be a little challenging. Archetype decks don't need any effort to get updated, specially those I mentioned (if Pegasus went full Toon).

Just confirming, using cards from other Archetypes (sticking to a maximum of 2 per archetype) is fine, right?

Joey Wheeler

Monsters (26):

2x Lord of the Red

1x Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon

1x Marauding Captain

1x Time Wizard

1x Copycat

1x Performage Trick Clown

1x Performage Damage Juggler

3x Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands

1x Heroic Challenger - Thousand Blades

2x Speedroid Menko

1x Mathematician

2x Junk Synchron

2x Kuribandit

2x Necro Gardna

3x Maxx "C"

2x Black Metal Dragon

Spells (13):

2x Red-Eyes Transmigration

3x Pre-Preparation of Rites

1x Raigeki

3x Instant Fusion

2x Twin Twisters

1x Reinforcement of the Army

1x Foolish Burial

Traps (2):

1x Bottomless Trap Hole

1x Treacherous Trap Hole

Extra (15):

1x Flame Swordsman

2x Elder Entity Norden

1x Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

1x Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend

1x PSY-Framelord Omega

1x Hi-Speedroid Chanbara

1x Herald of the Arc Light

1x Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon

1x Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer

1x Daigusto Emeral

1x Abyss Dweller

1x Traptrix Rafflesia

1x M-X-Saber Invoker

1x Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss

If Yugi was to go to Joey and say "Hey, let's upgrade your deck", the first thing he'd do is remove the bad cards. Initially I was going to try to build my deck around Alligator's Sword and Baby Dragon, but the power of Lord of the Red prevented that thought process from continuing. But Joey still has some usable cards. Time Wizard is risky, but if you have Heroic Challenger - Thousand Blades in your Graveyard, you can start a combo going. Worst comes to worst, it's still a Raigeki. Copycat is a decent threat remover. And Marauding Captain can turn into M-X-Saber Invoker, getting to your Heroic Challenger as soon as possible.

Maxx "C" and Necro Gardna are especially great with Lord of the Red on the field, because you can activate their effects at any point in your opponent's turn, and then destroy a card too. Junk Synchron combos well with Black Metal Dragon, bring out Herald of the Arc Light, as well as adding Transmigration or Red-Eyes to your hand. Kuribandit lets you get to your Pre-Preparation of Rites as quickly as possible, with Speedroid Menko and Necro Gardna keeping your Life Points safe.

Note: I interpreted the criteria quite differently to the others. I thought we were making characters' decks as powerful as possible. I duelled Stomach before and simply having Norden and Castel made a large difference (although, Lord of the Red brushes off Relinquished like an ant). That said, I like making decks as competitive as possible, and last week's contest was about taking a break from that, so I wanted to focus on Lord of the Red instead of Thousand Dragon.

Technically, Leed and Megalo support the "Abyss-" archetype, which is a S/T Card archetype does not include those monsters.

Yes, I think the wikia is wrong, since Abyss Warrior and Abyss Soldier are not supported by that archetype. The monsters form a series.
